Will The 2019 Ford Focus ST Really Sport 275 Horsepower?

ford-focus-st_0There is a buzz in the air about the performance numbers of the next Ford Focus ST. According to the UK website Autocar, the new hot hatch may hit the showroom floor putting out an impressive 275 horsepower from a 1.5-liter, twin-scroll-turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

Now, if a 1.5-liter engine sounds familiar, it’s probably because last month at the Geneva Auto Show, Ford released the specs for it’s 2018 Ford Fiesta ST, which will feature a 1.5-liter, inline three-cylinder engine producing an already impressive 197 horsepower and 214 lb-ft of torque.

So, exactly how is Ford planning on putting out all that power from the same 1.5 liters?

Twin-Scroll turbo advantages are quicker boost response, increased power at all engine speeds, increased turbine efficiency, and reduced fuel consumption.

Our guess is it will all come down to maximizing turbine efficiency. By switching to the twin-scroll design like in the Focus RS, the hot hatch will be able to raise power throughout the powerband, improve the overall boost response, and increase the ST’s fuel economy as well. It’s also already been reported that the new Focus ST may feature cylinder deactivation as well — just like the Fiesta ST — ensuring maximum fuel efficiency.

Although no official word has been announced from Ford as of yet, we are extremely interested to see what Ford Performance engineers have up their sleeves. We know that if a completely new twin-scroll turbo system is in the works for the 1.5-liter engine, this could be some exciting news for hot hatch enthusiasts.
