PRI 2017: Fuel System Upgrades For Corn-Fed ’Stangs

Our new EcoBoost Mustang drop-in fuel pump is E85 compatible. — Scott Mitchell, Livernois Motorsports

When it comes to upgrading the Mustangs for high-ethanol fuels, tuners address the fuel system early on. This is especially true when it comes to tuning the EcoBoost engine for E85 fuel. This often requires upgrading the pumps and injectors to provide enough fuel volume to compensate for this fuel’s lower energy density.

Livernois Motorsports now offers two options for feeding horsepower-hungry modern Mustangs. The Firestorm High-Pressure Fuel Pump for the EcoBoost Mustang and the all-new, Firestorm Dual Fuel Pump Kit for 2015-2017 Ford Mustangs. This drop-in pump will be available early 2018.Livernois

“Our new EcoBoost Mustang drop-in fuel pump is E85-compatible,” Scott Mitchell, of Livernois Motorsports, told us. “It’s rated up to 700 horsepower on E85 and is a complete drop-in replacement.”

On the other end of the fuel system, Livernois offers its high-pressure fuel pump kits. The E85-compatible kit is a complete bolt-on upgrade and includes a new high-pressure fuel pump, new custom fuel line, and hardware to make installation easy. The pump is said to increase fuel flow by 40-percent over the stock pump by featuring a dual spring design for superior motion control and low-pressure inlet lines.

“As with all EcoBoost engines, the factory fuel pump is insufficient even at stock power levels,” Andy Rickets, Vehicle Operations Manager at Livernois Motorsports & Engineering, said. “Tuning these engines for more power always results in a loss of fuel pressure. We recommend our upgraded fuel pump even when just using gasoline as there is a safety advantage, but the increase in flow is enough that you are now able to run ethanol-blend fuels on these cars.”

The Livernois Firestorm High-Pressure Fuel Pump (LPP501115) is available now and is designed to fit all 2015-2017 Ford Mustangs with 2.3-liter EcoBoost engines.
