Vintage Video: 1935 Driving Test (UK) Video By Ford

In 1935, the United Kingdom began to require their drivers to take what we know today as, the ever dreaded, driving test. Just like today, this test had to be passed with a certain number of marks before you could continue to drive in public. Ford Motor Company created special videos to help citizens pass this new test. You can call it an early form of Driver’s Education.

Mr. R Beere was the first to pass the, initially voluntary, driving test in 1935.

In this 7 minute video, the narrator explains what hand gestures are and how to properly use them. Today when you think of hand gestures I’m sure they mean something completely different. However, just like in 1935, people don’t use their turn signal blinkers.

There are many similarities between 1935 and today’s adaptation of the UK’s driving test in the United States. One similar requirement is that you must bring your license and insurance information to the test. Also, you will be given a vision test not that it will help some drivers drive any better.

The video also gives specific dos and don’ts for during the test, such as smooth takeoffs and proper signaling.  The video also highlights how to be, a courteous and safe driver. Of course you also get to see the classic “Highway Code” book which, back then, looked much simpler than the novel they give people today. I guess we picked up a few more secrets to driving along the way.

Ford Motor Company hit a home run getting drivers the information they needed to be a successful driver in 1935 and set a solid foundation for people that drive on the road today. This stands as another notable achievement for the blue oval.
