When we think of speed, we tend to think in terms of ground vehicles. So sure, the Bugatti Veyron is the fastest production land vehicle with a top speed of over 250 mph…but compared to a top fuel dragster, it is kind of slow. Compared to a jet fighter, the Bugatti is even slower. See, speed is all relative, and sometimes it is fun to take two completely different vehicles, and race them…just because.
Sure, this race between a 490 horsepower Dodge Challenger SRT8 and a McDonnell Douglass MD500 has a predetermined ending, and you don’t have to be a genius to figure out which vehicle has the advantage. But we still want to watch the race happen…again, just because.
While you may not consider helicopters to be precise vehicles, this video shows that with a well-versed pilot at the controls, you can get a copter like the MD500 to do just about anything. Originally used as observation copters for the U.S. military, the MD500 is now employed for monitoring traffic, as well as pleasure craft. While the top speed of 155 mph may not sound impressive…well, just watch the video.
The MD500 absolutely dominates the HEMI Challenger off the line, and the pilot never looks back. The Challenger really didn’t stand a chance, and while the end of the race was close, that is only because the MD500 had to climb a few hundred feet into the air to make the turn around. Just for kicks, the helicopter also races a go-kart, with similar results.
Know what race we want to see next? Go-kart vs. Challenger…now that’d be a race worth watching.
