Video: Wet, Wild, Sideways Lap In A Tuned Porsche 993

Porsche 911s have always had a reputation for wild handling characteristics, and even if you have four wheel-drive on your side, they’re still challenging machines to get the most of. Well, this could not be better displayed than by the footage above, which shows a man calling the shots and keeping this air-cooled Porsche on-track by the skin of his teeth.

That man goes by the name of Sandro Ziegler. A guy with those sorts of skills generally knows the value of lightweight, and has cut a substantial amount of heft from his 993 Carrera 4. To put the Porker on a diet, he installed plexiglass rear and side windows, removed the air conditioning, added RS door panels, chucked out the carpet, added set of featherweight OZ Racing Alleggerita wheels, and while we’re at it—it looks like the heater’s been removed, or is at least out of commission.

With his forerarms tensed, Zeigler does all he can do keep the 993 from careening off the track.

With his forerarms tensed, Zeigler peers through the small, fogless spot on his windshield.

Those considerable weight savings bring the tally down to a mere 2,650 pounds, which gives Ziegler a little more maneuverability on the sodden track, which is so slick he may as well have 1,000 horsepower underneath his right foot. For better or worse, that figure is closer to 270—a re-valved engine with bigger cams does the work here. Nevertheless, a rear-engined layout, standing water, and lots of stabbing and sawing in the cockpit means the Porsche rarely runs in a straight line, and for the demonstration of skill and bravery, we thank you, Mr. Ziegler.
