Posted on Engine Swap Depot, RP Customs, with a little bit of help from Curran Brothers Racing, has fitted a new beast under the hood of this Mazda RX-3. Curran Brothers Racing built out a peripheral ported 26B quad-rotor engine that makes this compact a pure speed demon.
Sold for only six years in the United States, the RX-3 was a phenomenal success, selling well during its production years it still holds a place in the scene today as a bit of a cult icon. This RX-3’s engine is naturally aspirated, has fuel injection, and runs a dry sump oiling system. Power meets the pavement with a Tremec transmission and Ford 9-inch rearend. Oh yeah, it’s a four-rotor.
What the Curran Brothers team calls a mechanical symphony, just listen to that quad-rotor engine churn. There’s so much power being thrown down to the wheels that the RX-3 loses control a bit upon each pull it makes. The best pull for this RX-3 so far is 10.5 seconds at 134mph. Not bad for the renowned Wankel engine.

It may look like an ordinary RX-3, but this one is a sleeper in disguise. Better watch out if you pull up to a light against this beast. Call it a baby dragster, but we commend this build as it almost sounds like a full-blown Indy car. What are your thoughts on this RX-3? Would it be overkill to give this beast some boost under the hood? Be sure to comment below.
