Brian Johnson may be best known as the golf cap wearing, lyric-belting frontman for the iconic Australian rock band AC/DC, but like many rock musicians, Johnson also has a deep affinity for cars as well, as evidenced by Johnson’s own motoring show, Cars That Rock, as well as his numerous cameos on popular automotive TV shows discussing some of his favorite rides.
But before you jump to the conclusion that Johnson might be another rich guy who just likes to look at his collection of cars in his garage, check out this video of Johnson behind the wheel of a Pilbeam sports racer on the streets on St. Petersburg, Florida during a multi-class race at the Grand Prix of St Petersburg.
Johnson’s prowess behind the wheel is made even more impressive by his tenacity to make passes in the narrow confines of the St. Pete course – like many street courses, St. Pete does not allow for wide run-off areas – you screw up, and into the wall you go.
The frontman’s race car of choice appears to be a Pilbeam MP98, the company’s latest prototype-style racer, which sports a fiberglass body around a steel tube space frame, carbon fiber aero pieces, a Sadev sequential six speed gearbox, a Honda 2.0-liter four cylinder motor built by Neil Brown Engineering, and a double wishbone suspension with Koni dampers. Watch this purpose-built race car make short work of some vintage sports cars in the clip above.
