Last month we reported on the reveal of Oreca’s 2015 FIA WEC season LMP2 contender, the Oreca 05. As the successor to the French manufacturer’s Oreca 03, the 05 boasts numerous enhancements over the outgoing car, including a new electrically-assisted power steering system, a more compact gearbox, new suspension components, a thorough rethink of the car’s aerodynamic package, and a host of driver safety improvements as well.
The cars will initially be campaigned in FIA WEC and ELMS by KCMG and Thiriet by TDS Racing, and both teams have already secured entries in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. But, before the new car makes its on-track debut during ELMS pre-season testing at the Paul Ricard Circuit in Marseille, France later this month, Oreca is giving us a chance to see exactly what the Oreca 05 is made of.
Starting with just a bare driver cell, this time lapse video shows all the components (and people) required to make the Oreca 05 a reality. From a foundational standpoint, these mid-engined prototype race cars share very little in design with your typical front-engined, body-on-frame production vehicles, so it’s interesting to see just how everything fits together, and realize what an incredible effort it is to build a race car – even from parts on hand, ready for assembly.
The opening round of the 2015 FIA WEC Championship will take place on April 12th at the Silverstone Circuit in England for the 6 Hours of Silverstone.
