Much like Chevy’s PDR (performance data recorder) for the C7 Corvette, Volkswagen just released their own in-car data recorder in the form of an app for the Golf R and other R models.
The car doesn’t have a built-in camera like the Chevy’s iteration does. Instead, it uses a LogBox, which is installed by the dealer, to transmit the car’s data via bluetooth to the app on your phone. The features of the RaceApp are pretty nice, too.
With system records acceleration, lap times, camera footage (from the phone’s camera), and evaluates the route. A driver will have a lot of fun with this app, as well as learn about their driving and they need to work on to improve lap times.
With all of these cool features available at the driver’s finger tips, Volkswagen doesn’t want their customers using this app on the street, only safe racetracks, so be smart about how you use it. The app, right now, is only available in the German-language iTunes app store, but should be on the English app store soon. It is also available on Google Play for Android users. Before picking up one of Volkswagen’s new $365 LogBoxes, consult your dealer with any questions or concerns first. Also, Check out the video to see the system in action.
