VIDEO: Tuning Thursdays: OMC’s “How Bizarre”

Hello all, and welcome back to Tuning Thursdays, where you can kick back, imbibe your preferred libations, and plan to plan what you’ll do for the rest of the day. Last week, we listened to the Boss regale us of his days “Racing in the Street” with his high-performance, big-block ’69 Chevy.

This week, we’re going to remark some more about the awesomeness that is the Chevy Impala. In this case, it’s the ’68 model, used to drive the pop group OMC (short for Otaru Millionaires’ Club, a tongue-in-cheek reference to the slumlike conditions of the city’s suburban areas) around California as they chant “How Bizarre.”

OMC

Budgetary concerns aside, this music video/press conference is pretty sexy.

OMC, a New Zealand-based pop group that went the way of the one-hit wonder, made this song back in the mid-90s, riding on the waves of other here-today, gone-tomorrow artists like Eiffel 65 and White Town. It was released as a single in December 1995, eventually peaking at #2 on the Billboard Top 100. The song was made available here in the U.S. in early 1997.

OMCImpalaWritten by lead singer Pauly Fuemena and producer Alan Jansson, the song details an appropriately bizarre tale of events having something to do with a circus and a big party that attracts police and media attention. The gang cavorts around the Golden State in their red convertible, but leaves us to our imagination as Fuemena blankly tells us to “buy the rights” if we want to know more.

Assuming you would want to know more, that is. In any case, we hope this song brightened your day a little.

We’ll see you next time here on Tuning Thursdays. Now where did I put those lugnuts…
