Watching train wrecks is an American pastime. For car geeks seeing cars with the potential to be heroic fail in the most dramatic ways possible is must-see TV.
Sometimes the course, or more precisely one portion or turn on the course, gets the better of the drivers. Such was the case at the recent Jari-Pekka Rally in Heinola, Finland.
There were some close-call survivors but it seemed flips, cartwheels, and crashes were more the norm in this footage posted by Pata78 Motorsport Videos.
A white car flips five or six times and it is soon obscured by snow dust. As the dust settles it still hard to tell straight away where the cars is. In some cases a helpful public get to the car seemingly before it stops moving. Then the onlookers do their best to help right the ralliers but most of the cars are too far gone to continue. One car came to a stop and its hissing radiator could be clearly hears.
But the winner of the most dramatic actor in a rally race is the silver car that leaves the road at a high rate of speed at the 4:11 mark. The car flips violently and travels farther off the road than any other car. SO far that it slams into a tree and bounces off like a rag doll. There is an ominous crush point in the cars roof just in front of the rear glass. Had this impact occurred another three or four feet forward it would have been dire for the driver.
