Video: The Motor City And The Mustang II

Though the Ford Motor Company is technically based in Dearborn, Detroit and the surrounding suburbs is the car capital of America. Though it has fallen on hard times, Detroit is still an amazing city host to some unique and incredible works of art, historic companies, and unique automotive artifacts. Ford is forever intertwined in the Motor City in more ways than one.

This includes a concept car that influenced the Mustang we came to know and love, which is the focus of the next video in Ford’s Mustang countdown.

Though the Mustang I concept was, as you might have guessed, the first Ford concept to use the Mustang name, the four-cylinder, two-seat sports car was nothing like the car Ford eventually built. But the Mustang II ended up influencing the final production models with its tri-bar tail lights, bullet-shaped front end and side-view mirrors.

It also had seating for four, rather the dual occupancy of the Mustang I. It was even built on a pre-production Mustang body, and today it resides with the Detroit Historical Museum. This museum has chronicled the highs and lows of Detroit’s influence and culture, and today there is a new revival springing up even among the decaying public services and crumbling buildings.

Detroit is down, but far from out, and hopefully the recent success of Ford can help bring life back to some of the Motor City’s darkest corners.
