Video: Testing BBK’s Cold Air Intake And Throttle Body For Coyotes

It’s no secret that the Coyote engine responds well to bolt-on performance parts. For nearly three decades one of the most common bolt-on modifications has been a cold air intake system, and BBK Performance has been selling these systems for Mustangs since the late 1980s.

Getting cooler air to the engine more efficiently equates to more horsepower. BBK does this by using a larger, smoother air inlet tube, as well as a new cone filter to allow more air into the engine. When coupled with their 90 mm throttle body, the Coyote engine breathes much easier allowing for more power, and better throttle response.

Another reason why cold air intake systems are so popular with enthusiasts is the ease of installation. These systems are quite literally a bolt on affair, requiring only hand tools to install and installation can be completed in a matter of minutes. In this video recently released by BBK they install their cold air intake system on a 2013 Mustang GT, along with one of their new throttle bodies. Both of these changes are bolt on affairs, and SCT does offer tunes specifically for these modifications which will help take advantage of the upgrade.

With the car baselined before and after, we can see that the stock Mustang GT made 366 peak hp and 340 ft-lbs peak torque on the dyno. Peak numbers are great, but the power an engine uses the most is what we call the area under the curve. Taking a look at the post-installation dyno numbers we can see that stock at 4,300 RPM the engine was making 276.51 hp and 337 ft-lbs torque. At that same RPM with the BBK cold air intake and throttle body installed the car made 305 hp and 372.69 ft-lbs of torque, a gain of 35 ft-lbs and 29 horsepower. These are strong results, and will ultimately yield usable power that owners will notice in all driving situations.
