As 4×4 enthusiasts we’re always looking for a new spot to get out to and play with our off road goodies. If you’re a part of the culture, you know that sometimes the same old spots can get boring. If you’re residing in a more densely populated area, as your author currently is, finding a place to take your pride and joy off of the beaten path is difficult as most of the good spots are illegal to journey through. Now, imagine if there were some sort of convenient online database that contained every single nearby location for your off-highway exploration enjoyment.

The Google Maps project wants to show all.

At this point I’m sure we’re all familiar with Google Maps and its Street View feature. Basically it allows you to take a look at any address you see fit as if you were standing in front of it. The latest development to its Maps division has Google looking for volunteers to strap a device known as The Trekker on their back and explore trails and new places around the world. The idea, as seen in the “>video above, is to discover new places that its Street View Subaru wouldn’t be able to access. I think you know where we’re going with this …

No offense Google, but we can take it from here.

While currently the equipment is only open to students and non-profits willing to travel on foot, we here at Off Road Xtreme would gladly volunteer to take this thing to the ends of the earth to explore both new and historic trails alike to bring our community closer together and provide a better experience for all!

Heck, if they can figure out a way to mount consumer cameras to trucks, we surely could figure out how to mount this hardware atop our rigs. Think about it Google, think about it. Just give some four-wheel-drive clubs or off-road publications the opportunity. Hint, hint … You know where to find us.
