If massive wings and 800 horsepower fail to get it noticed, the Hulk WRX has a paint job that will. Autotech Engineering uses this time attack monster as a promotional device to showcase their tuning ability. With specialized parts to produce the fastest single lap, this slime green racer’s build process shows how a time attack car differs from the conventional road racer.
Starting life as a standard WRX, the guys at Autotech have invested lots of their own money into turning this thing into a serious head-turner and title-contender. Interestingly, their road to motorsport success has been thick with potholes. When adding a motor capable of 1,000 horsepower, an outrageous aero package, a sequential gearbox and R-comp tires wasn’t getting them a much better lap time than that of their stock car, they turned to local race engineer Dejan Ninic to help refine the car through advanced telemetry.
Though this WRX boasts some pretty impressive numbers, it is the choice of parts which make this a true time attack car and not an endurance racer. For instance, the brakes are noticeably small. Smaller brakes will get to operational temperature sooner but won’t last very long. Since time attack is a one-lap affair, brake longevity means needless weight. Since overtaking doesn’t occur in time attack, the search for the maximum amount of downforce is paramount. Besides, any drag produced by the wings can be easily overcome by the massive amount of thrust provided. Finalizing the list of mentioned gremlins was the less-than-ideal engine placement. Bringing the engine back a few cm meant a remount of the differential so that the half-shafts weren’t stressed excessively.
The one-lap time attack format calls for a totally different set of guidelines and objectives from that of a conventional road-racing car. When you consider how a road-racer is, in some ways, more compromised for longevity than a sprint-special like this WRX is when you realize how daunting Autotech’s task really is. If you were taking on such a monumental challenge, you might be a little more keen to painting your car slime green as well.
