They say everyone has their own personal tastes and no where can a better example be found than in this custom 1968 Camaro. A real time capsule from the early 1970s, it can be seen sporting a vintage tunnel ram intake, side pipe exhaust, Cragar wheels and metallic orange paint with paisley graphics. While all of this may seem weird today, this Bowtie is an icon from an era were people a lotta grass and took peyote trips out in the desert.

One of our favorite YouTubers, ScottieD found this “Outrageous Camaro” at the Street Rod Nationals Plus 2014 in Louisville, Kentucky. The car is certainly outrageous as it has been customized in an early 1970s style. To understand why these weird attributes were cool you have to look at the philosophy of the decade. The 1960s was a time of political turmoil, war, and all around madness. By the time the ’70s rolled around, people wanted to forget the 1960s and just wanted to had fun. The result: everything became as weird and over the top as possible, even hot rods.

1960s musclecars could be spotted rolling around with over the top metallic paint jobs, tunnel rams, carbs sticking out of the hood, side pipe exhaust and on occasion an inch or two lift in the rear. Despite looking weird, at the time this was viewed as a method of escapist fun for rodders in the 1970s. Many owners were not out to destroy or devalue their cars but simply to include their personal touch in the design.
