Video: Scaring Mom in a Modded R35 GT-R

There are few things in life as rewarding as giving Mom a real scare, especially when the means of frightening her isn’t one of her kids coming home with a broken limb, but a 700-horsepower GT-R. Tuned by Alpha Performance, the Alpha 7 package for the R35 GT-R has all the goodies necessary to give Mom a few more gray hairs – if that’s your goal, you little sadist.

It’s easy to be mean when you’ve got 700 horsepower and an incredible 723 pound-feet of torque, but that’s only telling half the story. By retaining the stock turbochargers, there’s very little turbo lag to begin with, but the package helps reduce any delay with a freer-flowing, HKS Legamax exhaust – with AMS and Akrapovic options available as well.

Coupled with this are larger intercoolers, an improved intake system, midpipes, and downpipes, all from Alpha Performance. Slap on a set of 1000cc injectors from Injector Dynamics, and the whole package begins to get a bit more interesting.

Despite a subtle exterior, the Alpha 7 has enough grunt to rearrange one’s internal organs.

The beauty of “breather” mods like this, when coupled with better cam timing and fuel maps and the Cobb Accessport V3, is that throttle response and power delivery go through the roof without any top-end slump.

No archetypal, lazy snails waiting until 6,000 RPM before they can be raised from their slumber. At 2,500 RPM, the Alpha 7 boasts an additional 120 horspower and 270 pound-feet over the stock figures, which are nothing to be sniffed at, offering the driver roughly 600 pound feet total at a couple thousand revs over idle.

Judging by the way Mom bounces around in the passenger seat, she probably hasn’t endured much in the way of cornering forces like these before. With a resilient smile, she chuckles nervously about the wild performance of the Nissan, which hardly gets into boost on the restrictive autocross course – give the car some room and the reaction would be quite different. Though somewhat steep at $12,000 not including labor (or the base price of the car!), the Alpha 7 has the ability to give Mom a heart palpitation, and that has to be worth the entire bill easily.
