While there isn’t a shortage of videos of people scaring hapless passengers in fast cars, there are few as endearing as this one.
Our driver “Scott” decides to take his mother on a sprint around the autocross course during a non-SCCA S4 class event. Initially he had planned to use his reportedly heavily modified Subaru Forester but mechanical maladies forced Scott to switch up to his girlfriend’s 2014 Volkswagen Golf GTI, which is known to be no slouch on the auto-x course in its own right.
Almost immediately off the line Mom goes NSFW with the sailor talk, then declares the car will certainly need new tires once this debacle is over. But after getting used to things, she settles into a nice flowing stream of oos and ahs, even regaining enough composure to switch back into mom mode when she pauses to tell Scott “You’re doing very well honey!”
After that it’s back to transitioning between guarded concern and mild terror, but Mom still has the presence of mind to try and note Scott’s time as they pass through the traps.
Scott mentions that despite not having his own car for the run, he ended up placing sixth out of twelve competitors in his class – not bad considering he was driving what we’d assume is a more or less unmodified GTI with the handicap of the additional weight of the woman who raised him. Way to go, Scott’s Mom – you’ve set the bar pretty high for gearhead mothers.
