Video: Salt Fever Captures Excitement of Speed Week

If there is one place that a great deal of hot rodding can trace it’s roots to, its Bonneville. Known as the capital of speed the world over, gearheads from around the world gather here once a year for a week long celebration of all things fast.

We recently came upon this target=”_blank”>video highlighting some of the action at this year’s 2012 Speed Week. You’ll see all manner of vehicles here. The intro highlights what looks to be a Model A as it cruises into town for the event.

There is a very cool few seconds of footage showing a large number of cars driving across the salt, headed in to setup for this year’s event.

We catch a quick glimpse of a coupe with what might have a midget or other aerp nose, mechanical injection and possibly a big-block engine, though it goes by so quickly through the shot we’re not entirely sure of which engine. Looking as though it could be a scene from the 1950s at 0:50 there’s a roadster push starting a streamliner.

Perhaps most famous or well known in the video is the Poteet and Main Speed Demon machine, which was able to set a few new records this year as well. We also catch a quick glimpse of a belly tanker awaing it’s turn, it’s always cool to see those. There are also shots of cars in the pit area being worked on throughout the video which gives it a cool real world feel.

We love the varied shots of cars traveling across the salt at record speeds as they make their runs down the short and long courses.

The video also highlights a few motorcycles both newer appearing and vintage. There’s even a quick shot of what has to be a four-cylinder powered Renault waiting for it’s turn on the course. Streamliners and even trucks on custom chassis, all powered by various forms of motivation populate the entire video. There’s also the requisite old guys in chairs watching all the action as it unfolds.

This video got us excited about speed week all over again, too bad we’ll have to wait nearly a year before that time comes around again.
