Sprint car racing has always been dangerous, but if you were to step back in history you would see just how truly dangerous of a sport it was back in the day. However, those were the days that the heroes of our sport made a name for themselves. Not only did they demolish the competition, but they also outran death on a nightly basis.
Drivers like A.J. Foyt, Al Unser, Stan Fox, and many more, cut their teeth in these awesome but dangerous machines.
If you could win in these open wheel cars you could win anywhere in the country.
OneDirt’s Tech Editor BJ Kimbrough is actually in the process of restoring a vintage sprint car to run on the west coast. Until he finishes, we’ll have to make due with videos like the one above. The driver is John Stanley and he is driving a 600 horsepower vintage sprinter equipped with a small block chevy.
Normally here we would say something about how the track needs a little water, but in these cars, it has to be fun as hell to drive! When he gets the thing pointed straight and gasses her up, you really get a feel of how crazy these rides really were!
