Warning: The video above shows spectator injury and death.
As of right now, rally is one of the most dangerous sports to spectate in. The Rally de A Coruña is a part of the Galician Championship and draws thousands of fans to the streets every year to enjoy the festivities, but this year the race was called off after a nasty crash that killed six spectators.
A rally car was making its way through the crowded section of the stage when its driver lost control. The car veered off course in a cloud of dust, striking the area that was populated with spectators. The car flipped a few times after it initially hit a rock and landed on its tires, only to roll backwards into the same populated spectator area. The crash unfortunately killed six people, four women and two men, and two of them were pregnant women. The fact that there were pregnant women spectating a very crowded rally stage is beyond us. It’s one thing to be at a racing event with catch fences and other barriers, but to be at a rally with literally no boundaries is completely insane and unsafe.
Needless to say, the race was called off after the crash. Police are currently investigating the cause of the accident, but it could be as simple as a snapped tie rod or locking up the brakes. Whatever the cause may be, this is a serious reminder to be safe at rally events like these with thousands of people spectating. There have been enough racing-related deaths this year, and we don’t need anymore.
The way that the police officer handled the whole situation while giving a press release about the accident was disgusting as well. “The safety measures at the rally had been checked. The driver’s documents and state of the vehicle had been checked. Everything was fine. But despite all that, these things happen.”
Yeah, these things happen, but just look where the huge crowd of people were. Obviously, the safety measures weren’t checked at all. As you can see in the video, spectators lined that whole turn, from the straight, all the way through. Had there been no spectators towards the outside of the turn and only on the inside of the turn, there would have been no deaths and just a mangled rally car. Although this rally has been going on for years and spectators have stood in the same places over and over, all it takes is one freak accident while being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The truth is, there is no safe place to stand while watching a rally event. There are no barriers, just you and the elements.
Sure, some rallies might have hay bales and other areas taped off, but people will still try to get closer to the action for that extra amount of adrenaline. We’ve seen plenty of close calls in videos, but please just be safe if you are going to be spectating a rally event. There’s a reason why there’s no grandstands on rally stages. We really hope this spurs some serious in-depth safety investigations within the world of rally.
