For those who aren’t familiar with the Gatebil events, they’re the ultimate outdoor festival for the automotive enthusiast. Equal parts monster truck show, Van Halen concert and space shuttle launch, Gatebil typically takes place during the warmer parts of the year and garners huge crowds, but for the adventurous and thick-skinned, there’s a more grueling version of the event held in the freezing Norwegian countryside during the winter months.
Known as Gatebil on Ice, this gathering of petrolheads challenges drivers to thrash their cars on a frozen lake amidst a crowd of both purpose-built racing machines and potent street cars.

Doran’s Citroen rallycross steed contrasts the snowy landscape with a menacing, all-black paint scheme.
Of of the biggest draws to this event is Liam Doran’s Citroen rallycross monster. Sponsored by a well-known energy drinks company, the 700-horsepower machine is capable of immense performance on any sort of surface. Closely-stacked gears, plenty of turbocharged torque and four wheel-drive allow this car to carry incredible speed while sliding sideways across the ice.
Doran’s Citroen is a purpose-built racer, but the bulk of the attendants drive their own personal hot rods or dailies on the frozen surface. Making an appearance are lifted Supras, a yellow, V10-powered M5 and the odd Volvo wagon. Though everyone is mainly there for a few thrills, a beer with friends and some shared laughter, the tricky conditions call for considerable focus behind the wheel — as Doran demonstrates after limping back to the pits without a bumper and a rear wing.
