In Mustang circles, the Cobra Jet is a rung or two above standard Mustangs. The Cobra Jet is a hallowed name among enthusiasts. Thankfully, most of them are used as intended, unlike Cobra Rs of the recent past who live a pampered life as investments.

Don Carson is no stranger to fast Fords, so he knew his naturally aspirated 2013 Cobra Jet would lag behind those of the supercharged variety. He wasn’t concerned, though. He had an ace up his sleeve. He took the ‘Jet to JDM Engineering in Freehold, NJ. JDM put together a custom Coyote engine with a forged crank, Manley rods, Mahle pistons, Boss heads (CNC ported), JDM custom-spec cams, a Cobra Jet intake and throttle body, and a custom tune.  American Racing Headers long-tubes make one of the sweetest sounds we’ve ever heard.

All modifications are in accordance with NHRA Stock Eliminator specifications, and the car’s not exactly a lightweight at 3,200 pounds. We initially thought Carson’s ‘Jet had a stick in it, but he established the record 9.66 at 139 mph with a custom-gear’d C4 automatic in the tunnel.  Of course, the Cobra Jet has an Aeromotive fuel system to feed the naturally-aspirated beast.
