Back in May of last year, a couple of bystanders attending a vintage car club meet at an A&W drive-in in St. John’s, the provincial capital of Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada, captured video of a red C5 Corvette doing donuts in traffic while leaving the event.

Alleged ne’er-do-ell Wilson Barrett, aged 25, was quickly identified as the impolite driver behind the wheel thanks to a flurry of attention to the videos on social media, despite reportedly selling the car the next day. CBCNews reports that the incident caused a certain level of pearl-clutching among those present: Per Christina Shearing, “He could have caused a very tragic accident that evening.”

The predictable consequence of the jackassery for Barrett was a criminal charge of dangerous driving and an arrest by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary two months later. Just this week, his lawyer entered a “not guilty” plea on his behalf – he did not appear before the court.

The fallout for the car club? Increased police presence at their regular meets, which most club members seem to welcome to prevent further incidents. At the time of the original incident, CBCNews reports acting Sgt. Dave Hutchings issuing the most Canadian statement we’ve ever read: “The type of behaviour we believe was displayed on Thursday evening is not acceptable, not appropriate ways for motor vehicles to be driven in the province and certainly won’t be tolerated by the [RNC].”

So it seems that even in our polite neighbor to the north, they still face the same challenges car enthusiasts do here in the ‘States – guys with more right foot than brains, looking to show off in front of a bunch of people they barely know, who aren’t going to be impressed when you spin off into a curb anyway.
