Video: Looking Back into 80 Years of the Chevy Suburban

Building 10 million of anything is a huge accomplishment. I don’t know about you, but I am not sure that there are too many companies that can claim numbers like that. There are certainly not very many companies that can claim it has built 10 million of a single type of vehicle that has been in production for 80 years now. That’s a lot of birthday candles on a pretty big cake, and General Motors has produced a “>very special historical video as part of the celebration!

Chevy Suburban 80 YearsEven if there are plenty of companies that have built 10 million examples of a car or a truck, how many do you think have come out of a single assembly plant? Well, check this out. The year 2015 is a landmark for General Motors. It’s the 80th Anniversary of the Chevrolet Suburban, and it’s a huge deal for a single General Motors assembly plant.

It’s the 60th anniversary of the plant that has been building the Chevy Suburban since it was opened in 1954. One of the assembly workers at the Arlington plant, Dave Holt, has worked in it for half a century, and Holt says he has seen just about all of the milestones produced there.

“It’s a lot of fun when we build a special car, there’s always a ton of excitement from the team to watch it roll off the end of the line.” Holt continued, “The Monte Carlo was probably my favorite milestone vehicle, but every vehicle we build is special to me.”

80 years of the Chevrolet Suburban: 1935 on the left, and 2015 model on the right.

Arlington’s milestone vehicles include its one millionth car, a Pontiac Bonneville in 1965; two millionth car, an Oldsmobile Cutlass in 1971; three millionth car, another Oldsmobile, but this time it was a Cutlass Supreme in 1976; four millionth car, a Chevrolet Monte Carlo in 1981; and its five millionth car, a Monte Carlo SS in 1985.

Not to belabor the point, but in 1993, the Arlington plant rolled out its six millionth car, a Buick Roadmaster. Its seven millionth car was the 2002 Cadillac Escalade, eight millionth was the 2006 Chevrolet Tahoe, and the nine millionth was the 2011 Chevrolet Suburban. The Suburban, now celebrating 80 years in production, will be the 10 millionth vehicle to be assembled in the Arlington, Texas, General Motors plant.

Do you now own, or have you ever owned, any of these milestone vehicles? Let us know if so, and send us a photo and a little bit of information about it.
