Video: Little Known Facts About The Mustang

With the reveal of the 2015 Ford Mustang, we can now all take a step back and compare it to the Mustangs of years gone past. Ford has been big on playing up the history of the Mustang, going all the way back to the very first Mustang concept. While that car bore little resemblance to the Mustang as we know and love it, it did help influence all Mustang designs going forward.

This video, hosted by Bob Kriepke, takes a look back at the history of the Mustang, including the controversial concept that gave us the Mustang name.

The original Mustang I concept was designed by Herb Mirsh and Eugene Bordinat, and consisted of a mid-engine two-seater with a cutting-edge V4 engine. But this design was scrapped by Lee Iacocca, who rightly said that the design was too far out to catch on with Baby Boomers. While Iacocca canceled the model, another team worked on bringing it back to the market as a production model under the same name.

You may have known all of that, but did you know it took five tries for the team to get funding approval for the Mustang from the board of directors? It’s amazing how close the Mustang came to not being built, and it’s worth wondering if Ford would even still be around without the Mustang. The Mustang gave Ford the marketing chops to take big risks that later helped it corner the market on social media, which is why all you’re going to hear about for the next year is the 2015 Mustang.
