It’s pretty well known that Jay Leno has quite a car collection of his own, but as big as his collection is, there are still cars out there that have piqued his interest. Those cars, like this 1970 Dodge Charger from SpeedKore Performance is one of those cars that Jay has invited to Jay Leno’s Garage.

With a name like Tantrum, you’d expect this Charger to create quite the spectacle of itself, and that it does. Whether it’s sitting still at SEMA, or filling the wheel wells with smoke, Tantrum doesn’t disappoint when it comes to attracting attention.

While the original body lines were kept, including the complete, firewall-forward carbon fiber front end, it’s what is under the hood that might have Mopar purists throwing a tantrum of their own. But, as bad as that might sound on the surface, it’s more likely to have you questioning how they came up with the idea in the first place, since it’s really a first for something like this.

Under the hood lies a Mercury Marine-built offshore boat engine capable of 1,650 horsepower from it’s twin turbos, 32 valves, and 9.0 liters of grunt. If that, alone, doesn’t make your eyes widen, perhaps the price of a QC4v twin turbo crate engine will put your optics at full throttle: $68,000.

The massive intercooler and blowoff valves help keep boost on Tantrum, but a bit of a lag on the full boost from the twin turbines was almost mandatory to help keep the hides on the wheels. And getting all that power to those rear hides meant going with a transmission that can handle it – the bulletproof Tremec T-56 Magnum.

Subtle touches on the car include a modern Challenger tail lamp assembly, with some custom CNC trim and even 3D printed hood pins. Behind the wheels, a set of Baer six-piston calipers help tame Tantrum when it’s at full mental capacity. Tantrum is a full custom build with a lot of attention to detail, and, as always, Jay gets to drive all the cool stuff.
