Video: Jay Leno Spends Some Time With Sung Kang And His Fugu Z

Jay Leno has had some pretty famous cars and celebrities alike on his show, but he’s never had the chance to be up close and personal with a Datsun 240Z of this caliber.

Sung Kang, known for his role as Han in the Fast and The Furious films, brought his Fugu Z restomod-turned SEMA project down to Jay Leno’s garage for him to test out. Kang found an ad for the car on Craigslist, in which the previous owner had it sitting in a garage for 13 years. He claimed it was still drivable when he picked it up, but it needed some work. After seeing a rendering of the car with a unique widebody kit on the internet, he turned to social media to help source the kit.

After finding out the kit has never been produced, GReddy stepped up and said that they could contact Kei Miura of Rocket Bunny and have one produced for the car. Kang then dropped off the car at GReddy, and things got pretty serious. It wasn’t just a restomod/track day build for Kang at that point; it was a full-on SEMA build with GReddy onboard.

Under the hood sits an RB26 engine pulled from a 1994 Skyline GT-R mated to an RB25 transmission, but the neat thing is that the turbochargers were removed, and the engine was built to a high-compression spec. Kang’s buddy Michael stated that the car put down 240 naturally-aspirated horsepower on the dyno, which is quite impressive for the RB26 engine that relies on turbochargers to make power.

The car rides on a set of beautiful Volk TE37V wheels, the engine bay and interior are spotless, but the brakes need some fine-tuning. With the brakes being the only problem area thus far, we’d say this is one solid build. Kang stated in the video that his favorite part of the car is the little compartment behind the driver’s seat; everybody involved with the build signed their name to become part of the FuguZ

Kang’s dash was upholstered by a shop called Carbon Signal, which is located in Dubai. The owner of the shop reached out to Kang over social media to be a part of the build.

Our favorite part about the car is that it was built using the help of social media. Enthusiasts from around the world contacted Kang asking to contribute to the build. That’s the beauty of the automotive scene; everybody is willing to lend a helping hand or help out in some way or another, which is the way it should always be.

When Leno got the car out onto the street, it was easy to see and hear how special this car is. The ITB’d RB26 sounded amazing at high and low rpm, the car has a great stance, and it just looks beautiful cruising along. Kang originally wanted to track the car upon completion, and we’re hoping he’s not having second thoughts due to how much of a show car it is now. Either way, it’s a beautifully-executed car, that’s for sure.
