In the blinding snow, even modern aids aren’t enough to save a driver. As this harrowing clip demonstrates, ABS is actually a handicap in some of the more intense conditions, and some real driving ability is necessary to avoid an accident. When sudden snowfall on a Virginian country highway proves to be too much, it causes a massive pileup that nearly involves the driver of an Evo 9. Thankfully, the driver isn’t green.
Driving through an icy, obscured storm limits visibility, and the sudden appearance of a pileup not two hundred feet from the driver prompts a bit of panic braking. As all four brakes lock and the car begins to rotate, it’s overtaken by a Ford Edge which plows into the back of a parked car. The first wise move the Evo’s driver makes is to use a bit of cadence braking, with which he releases the locked wheels and allow them to rotate, thus improving braking performance.
Though there’s only so much one can do at those speeds, and cadence braking won’t stop totally short of the wreckage which lies in front of him. Amidst a flurry of profanity, he manages to avoid some of the battered machines and grazes the embankment, but importantly, keeps the car rolling without any signficant contact, thanks to his clever driving and quick thinking.
His second wise decision is to put his foot down once a semi careens across the picture, knocking away some of the spun cars like they were bowling pins. As the subtitle suggests, the time to leave is now. With a functioning car, he gets away with a damaged bumper, lip, side skirt and door, intercooler sprayer and brake caliper, though it could’ve ended much worse.
