Video: Huge Ferrari Crash at Road America!

Racing wheel-to-wheel is always a risky proposition, even on tracks with ambulances waiting on-site. Even in modern race cars with rollcages and crumple zones. When the red mist gets the better of some people, a bit of poor judgement at high speed can result in a spectacular incident, as these two amateur racers figure out the hard way.

Not the outlook a driver wants at breakneck speeds.

During a Ferrari Challenge event at the iconic Road America, an exciting battle between a 430 Challenge and a 458 Challenge gets nasty very quickly. From the little footage that precedes the crash, it appears the driver in the 430 is a bit quicker; making a very gutsy and cleanly-executed overtake in the corner that leads onto the course’s longest straight.

Not quick to back down, the driver in the 458 fights until he has to concede the position, but gets a great run onto the straight and begins to reel the 430 in. With less power and likely more drag, the 430 is no match for its successor on the straighter sections.

After hitting the catch fencing at 150 mph, the 458 immediately disintegrated.

As the 458 gets a bit of steam and looks to pass on the inside, the driver in the black 430 jerks to the right to try and force his opponent to lift. Unfortunately, the two collide, sending the nose of the 458 in the air. At those speeds, the underbody begins to generate some lift and the red 458 goes airborne, ominously looking skyward before crashing into a wall and spewing its innards everywhere.

As testimony to the resilience of these cars, the 458’s driver walked away without serious injury, despite hitting the catch fencing at 150 mph. It just goes to show, it pays to race with the best equipment.
