Casual Formula Drift fans will recognize the Gatebil logo as the main sponsor of Kenneth Moen’s S-chassis Formula Drift car. But, what is Gatebil? Gatebil is a Scandinavian term that loosely translates into hot rod, a car personalized but still intended for road use. It is also the name of a popular series of track day festivals that are put on in Sweden and Norway.
These festivals combine a manufacturer’s midway where the region’s tuning, lifestyle, and motorsports companies show their wares, drifting galore, time attack, car shows, concerts, and a rave party atmosphere. The drifting, often tandem, is intense. There are open track sessions and a structured drift competition
Gatebil consists of multiple yearly events. The extravaganzas are held at three tracks: Valerbanen Circuit in Braskereidfoss, Norway, Mantorp Park, in Mantrop, Sweden, and Rudskogen Motorpark, in Rakkestad, Norway. This year there will be five Gatebil events; two at Mantrop and Rudskogen, and one at Valerbanen. The biggest event is the July Festival at Rudskogen. It draws around 1,000 cars and more than 40,000 attendees from all over Europe and the world.
One of the more popular crews on the Scandinavian circuit is Team Pony Drift. This group of drifters also has a website that sells drift parts and gear and a drift school where sideways slides are taught. The main principals of the team are Ervin Arnaszus and his Mustang #666, Ieva Pe and her V8-powered widebody BMW E30 #777, Rasmus Moller and his #333 Nissan S14 with a single turbo 2JZ Supra motor under the hood, and Michel Rayes and his #444 DRIFT PATROL Mustang. The drift driving school known as the Pony Drift & Stunt Academy offers half-day and full-day courses for beginners through advanced level drivers. As expected the class cars are race ready Ford Mustangs GT 5.0s.
