We’re coming up on the 50th anniversary of our favorite pony car. This is a major milestone for many companies let alone a single product, and only a handful of other car badges can say they’ve been in continuous production for this long.

As long as there has been a Mustang there have also been enthusiasts racing them. Ford Racing recently released this video, done in slideshow fashion, showcasing 50 years of the Mustang at the racetrack. Opening with the Mustang 1 concept parading around the track, this video features many classic and late model Mustang racers.

We were shocked by the number of Fox-body racers in this video. There’s multiple SCCA, IMSA, Grand-am and other road racers from the 1980s, 1990s and even the S197 cars of today. This includes several ROUSH built racers, as well as many other well known racers of the era. There’s even shots of Mickey Thompson and others at the salt flats.

Of course no Mustang racing video would be complete without it’s share of drag racers. Aside from the classic shots, we also see John Force’s Funny Car and even a little NMRA Pure Street action with Shawn Johnson pointing the front end sky-high in his Cobra. There’s more than a handful of Shelby products in this video as well, including some early shots of the GT350.

It’s interesting to not only see how the Mustang has changed at the track through years, but also how racing has evolved. Many of the cars have gone from being very close to their street-going counterparts, to being purpose built tube chassis, that are only Mustang in name and appearance.

It’s been a great first 50 years of the Mustang winning at racetracks around the world, here’s to 50 more.
