In this flashback to Godzilla’s formative years we see Keiichi Tsuchiya relive a little history getting behind the wheel of the Group A STP Taisan Skyline GT-R he raced back in the 1991 season.
We see the Drift King demo the Skyline, which has been meticulously maintained and restored by Nismo, at Tsukuba for the 2013 Nismo Festival. This is not a bunch of parade laps, Tsuchiya digs his spurs into the Nissan and is quite impressed all these years later.
The video focuses on the 300km race at Sugo in 1992 where Tsuchiya gets in the Skyline in fifth place and has an epic battle for third place, the final step on the podium. It should be noted that this was often where the most hotly contested race was during this time as the Calsonic and Hasemi Motorsports Skyline racers were usually battling it out for the win (the two cars split the four championship from 1990 to 1993). The R32 Skyline GT-R would often take the top five or six spots as well, and Sugo was just such an occasion. The video also includes great race footage from inside and out of the car with Tsuchiya giving his remembrances of the day.
The Taisan Skyline GT-R was restored by Nismo in the prestigious Omori factory in 2000. The RB26 was dialed in to 25 psi and 650 horsepower in its heyday and 20 psi and 550 horses for the demo, and Tsuchiya used it all. He mentions the gear ratios did not match up well with the Tsukuba layout because they were from the Skyline’s last race at Fuji. Nevertheless Tsuchiya and the Skyline turn a very respectable 1:00.2 lap. Then Nobuteru Taniguchi and Manabu Orido show up for a little surprise. Driving replica Group A cars from the Sugo race, Tsuchiya is taken back in time. This video is a great mix of vintage footage, commentary, and scenes from today.
