The YouTube user Powerslide Lover has a channel chock-full of slightly insane onboards in all sorts of exotic machinery. Well dressed, coiffed and fond of oversteer, his getup is as stylish as his driving. Drama is a wonderful way to entice viewers, but when competing against something as quick and capable as Nissan’s GT-R, it isn’t always a blessing.
The low-end grunt of the GT-R’s turbocharged V6 helps it get a run on Powerslide Lover and his 458 Speciale. Running side-by-side at speeds of up to 155 mph, the two obviously have spent some time on the track together. While the Ferrari is the better car on the brakes, being 800 pounds lighter, the GT-R just retains the lead with late braking and calm, levelheaded positioning. As if to prove their capability behind the wheel, the two drift in sync as they leave the challenging Variante chicane amidst a cabin full of laughter.
The Ferrari makes another attempt at the Ascari chicane, but is thrown off rhythm by the GT-R holding the inside line and remaining alongside until the end of the braking zone, forcing the Ferrari to lose momentum and run wide. Though the two are matched in most places, the 458 does appear to have the advantage in several corners, but the GT-R is always better positioned to make the most of the situation.
Despite what some might assume, the Ferrari is really much faster when the speeds increase. Not many have the gusto to slide a car at 80 mph through the Parabolica, but it isn’t the cornering speed which separate the two. The immense weight difference and a tow allow the snarling Ferrari to edge ahead. Though Powerslide Lover’s skill behind the wheel is impressive, his friend in the demonstrably slower Nissan is the driver of the day, showing how a heavier, slower machine can retain the lead with knowledge of braking zones, overtaking maneuvers, and the ability to break an opponent’s momentum.
