It might be a few months old, but this review from Evo shows the best street-legal track cars going head-to-head. Interestingly, this comparison doesn’t focus solely on the biggest and baddest, but addresses the finer points of what an appealing track car can offer.
From the humble Caterham with less than 100 horsepower, to the fire-breathing GTR Nismo which provides 595 horsepower and 481 lb/ft of torque, there’s quite a wide array of weaponry tested here.
The GT-R and the new 991 GT3 is the one battle which seems to bring the YouTube peanut gallery out of their dank caverns to complain and protest. Not so surprisingly, the new 991 bests the heavier, less agile GT-R around a relatively tight handling circuit. But heavy-hitters aren’t the only cars offered in this test.
Some of the more affordable track tools, the Caterham, Renault’s lightweight front-drive hatches, and a turbocharged Miata from UK tuner, BBR, shows that having millions isn’t necessary for fun on the track.
For those who can’t stand the idea of having anything less than a thoroughbred as their trackday steed, the newest Ariel Atom is tested; and, despite its considerable advantages on paper, provides a startling realization to those who think that the fastest laps can only be had with the ostensible best.
Still, there’s more to be had from McLaren and Radical, who both provide racing cars that are suitable and approachable enough for mere mortals to use on trackdays. Overkill? Perhaps, but to some, the point of attending a track day is not just to drive fast, but to look like the king of the hill in the process. What is your flavor? Watch and find out.
