During a GT4 Series race at the Red Bull Ring in Austria last weekend, Jörg Viebahn in the Aston Martin was sparring over fourth position with Bulgarian Rosen Deskalov in a Sin R1 with the checkered flag in sight when disaster struck.
It was the last corner of the final lap of Race 2 on Sunday in the GT4 European Championship and both drivers did not want to go home with fifth place at the last possible moment of the event. Unfortunately it ended up yielding a DNF for both of them, and it easily could have been a whole lot worse than that.
As the two come into the right hander at speed, Viebhan makes an aggressive attempt to pass on the inside, but Deskalov decided not to concede the position, which left Viebhan with nowhere to go. Nearing the exit of the turn Viebhan’s driver’s side rear quarter makes contact with the front passenger side of Deskalov’s car, which sends them both into the retaining wall at high speed.
The angle at which the Aston makes contact with the wall ends up catapulting the car back off the barrier and on to the track, flipping it end over end in the air before it lands on its wheels.
The impact was so severe that the impact sent a wheel across the track into pit lane, but amazingly both drivers escaped major injury in the wreck, which had probably sent the guy in the flag station looking for a new pair of underwear.
