Video: Diving Into the Technology of the C5 Corvette Line-Up

With newer model cars comes better technology and that’s always been the case with each of the Corvette generations, including the C5. In the latest episode of Generations, Corvette Product Manager Harlan Charles discusses the technological advances that were introduced to the Corvette lineup starting in 1997 when the C5 made it’s triumphant debut. Check it out above.

The C5 Corvette was a reinvention of the American sports car, from the structure to the amenities offered. Starting in 1997, the Corvette featured a hydroformed steel structure that was lighter, stronger and had more functionality than previous generations. With that came more passenger and trunk space that truly converted the Corvette into a car that could be used for long distance trips or even as a comfortable daily driver.

The extra space added to the C5 Corvette was compliments of some rearranging, from moving the transmission to the rear of the car, which was also higher in the C5 models for aerodynamics, to splitting the fuel tank, which allowed for a lower cargo floor.

Besides more space, the C5 Corvette also brought new technology to the market. The small block Chevy now made 345 horsepower with the introduction of the LS1, and transformed into a 405 HP beast for the 2002 Z06’s LS6. The C5 Corvettes also featured stability control, run-flat tires on all models, and an available heads-up display.

As far as racing goes, the C5 Corvette generation was significant and brought about the introduction of the Corvette Racing factory-backed team as well as many wins on tracks across the United States and around the world.

With so much new technology and so many advances brought to the market, it’s surprising that the C5 generation was only seven years long, but in 2005, the famed C6 came into the picture, bringing with it even greater technology for the American sports car enthusiast.
