Derek Ward, a native of central Maryland and a regular competitor with the Northeast Outlaw Pro Modified Association (NEOPMA), escaped serious injury after a violent crash at the annual Superchargers Showdown at the Maryland International Raceway last weekend.
Ward was racing alongside fellow Northeast doorslammer standout David DeMarco in a matchup of supercharged Camaro’s in the opening round of eliminations when he lost control of his machine near the 1/8-mile finish stripe and struck the retaining wall in his own lane. The impact turned his car over once before landing back on its wheels and rolling to a stop in the shutdown area. Ward emerged from the car without any serious injury, but has reportedly dealt with the expected soreness of such an impact in the days that have followed.
Ward debuted the new Camaro this season, and scored his first career victory with the NEOPMA series in early August, during the rain-postponed finale of the Cecil County Dragway’s Strange Engineering Outlaw Street Car Shootout event from June. He then won again at the Northeast Outlaw Pro Mod Challenge V at Empire Dragway two weeks later.
Mike Decker, Jr. went on to win the 31st annual Superchargers Showdown and the $31,000 prize that went along with it, defeating Chuck Ulsch on a holeshot, 3.67 to 3.65.
