Video: Complete Pandemonium at LeMons

There are plenty of amateur racing events out there for the people looking to get their foot in the motorsports world, but for some reason, it seemed like all of them decided to attend last year’s LeMons race at Sonoma Raceway.

It’s a fantastic track that invites plenty of drafting, overtaking and strategy, but when there are triple-digit numbers of cars on the circuit at any given time, the whole experience becomes a bit different. Frankly, the number of contenders banging fenders and looking to outgun the next guy is a bit crazy, but for budget thrills, this sort of bare-bones racing is hard to beat.

Creative liveries are all part of the lighthearted LeMons experience.

The car which we get to ride along in for this particular video is a near-stock BMW E30. Without much power nor a ton of grip, this car is about on even terms with the rest of the competition in the pack. Where this car has an advantage is in the skills of its driver, Gregory Evans. An instructor for the Simraceway Driving School at Sonoma, Evans has the homecourt advantage, to put it mildly, and manages to scythe through the newbies that are undoubtedly looking to punt every contender off the circuit, given half a chance.

His charge through the field is fraught with close calls and a healthy amount of fender rubbing, but this is LeMons after all. When the car you drive can’t cost more than $500, there’s going to be a bit of argy-bargy going on, isn’t there? Evans knows this, watches the group ahead of him and wisely picks his time to pounce. Watch a real ace among the amateurs in this hilarious and educational onboard video.
