Video: Chuck Hanson Shows Us How to Install a LS Accessory Drive

As part four of the seven part series about doing an LS engine swap on a budget, Mr. Chevelle, Chuck Hanson, shows us how to install a LS accessory drive. Parts one, two, and three were previously covered by Chevy Hardcore, and I encourage you to check them out as well.

In this fourth installment, Chuck explains the project — a LS engine swap into a classic Chevelle chassis. Already installed into the chassis at this point, the Holley accessory drive system is ready to go. Why use a Holley accessory drive system? For this project, the a/c compressor needs to be repositioned because it sits too close next to the frame rail, and the Holley kit helps to move that. This also saves you from having to dig through the junkyard, or source parts from multiple sources.

Chuck Working on the Accessory DriveTo start off, Chuck bolts on the two basic brackets and needed spacer. The bracket which mounts behind the main bracket is specific to your application and the main bracket bolts down with 10mm bolts — as do many of the parts in a LS engine bay.

After properly torquing the bolts, it’s time to bolt up the power steering pump. Start out by attaching the bracket to the pump with the supplied M8 bolts. From there it bolts right up into the recess — again, torque to spec.

Next up is the idler pulley install, where you’ll start by installing it with the inner most bolt, torque to spec, and work on the next bolt. The alternator is now ready to go, install into the place and torque to spec.

An aluminum bracket mounts the a/c compressor, as you’ll recall is the problem part. After putting the spacer on the bracket, it’ll be ready to bolt, torque down, and go. From there it’s onto the Holley tensioner and installation of the pulleys. Chuck then covers the options for the compressor and how to finish up the installation.
