The 2015 Rallye Ronde de La Durance brought crowds out to watch the competitive race unfold in France recently. Driving a Citroen C2, rally driver Yoan Droumenq and co-pilot Gabriel Durand caught a little bit of air on a tight curve and went for a wild ride.
After catching air on the turn, the driver loses controls and smacks into the dirt, causing the car to go airborne as seen here on ” target=”_blank”>YouTube. As it flew through the air, the poor Citroen’s rear end smashes into a tree, crushing the roof like a tin can.
With everyone in shock and hands on their head, they could only expect the worst. However, Droumenq and Durand walked away from the horrific accident unscathed to everyone’s surprise.
The Citroen completely destroyed, and if the impact had been more toward the front of the vehicle the results would have been dire indeed. The roof damage would have been in the driver’s area not in the backseat area. the crowd rushed to help Droumenq and Durand as the car laid motionless and smoking on the narrow road. Rally driving may look fun but it clearly isn’t an easy task.
Whether it was the driver’s fault or a mechanical failure within the Citroen, we are thankful that neither of the occupants were severely injured. The high drama of this wreck should serve as a wake up call to fans of rally racing who often crowd the course mere feet away from the speeding cars. Anything can happen on these tight courses so always pay attention to the track.
