If you’re going to crash make it spectacular. That’s what 17 year-old Pedro Piquet, son of three-time Formula One Champion Nelson Piquet and younger brother of FIA Formula E champion and Global Rallycross driver Nelson Piquet Jr., did recently in Brazil.
Pedro is an accomplished racer in his own right, winning the 2014 Brazilian Formula 3 Championship but he proved he is the family’s best barrel roller. The mayhem went down as the Brazilian competed last weekend in a Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge race at the Autodromo Internacional Ayrton Senna in Goiania, Brazil. His dramatic opening lap mishap resulted in him flipping nine times.
The GT3 Cup Challenge Brazil press release lays it all out. “Pedro Piquet underwent x-ray and tomography exams, which revealed that the driver didn’t suffer any fractures. The driver will stay in the hospital until next Monday (21st of September) under medical observation. Pedro Piquet was removed from the track by ambulance after rolling over multiple times on the first lap of the Porsche GT3 Cup race, held this morning at the Autódromo Internacional de Goiânia. The competitor left the track conscious and was transferred to HUGO (Hospital de Urgências de Goiânia), under supervision of Dino Altmann, the medical director of Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Brazil.”
The young Piquet was lucky to escape with minor injuries to a hand, puffy eyes, and a healthy portion of overall bruising. He did leave the hospital as anticipated and should be ready to go in the series’ next event, the seventh of nine races held October 24th at the Autodromo Internacional de Curitiba.
