Video: Can the i8 Beat a 911?

Capable of taking on cars much more expensive, it’s safe to say the Porsche 911 is so well-engineered that has become a benchmark in the motoring world. If another German powerhouse known for its engineering brings something new and fundamentally different into the arena, is it fair to compare it against the established heavyweight? Better yet, is this new direction BMW is heading in a vision of what’s to be expected from sports cars in the future? In short, can a modern, hybrid-powered and fundamentally compromised sports car contend with a touchstone that’s been refined over half a century?

As beautiful as they are capable, these cars showcase two different schools of thought in automotive development.

To many forward-thinkers, the answer is yes. BMW’s new i8 compares Batmobile-styling with a sophisticated hybrid powertrain. The three-cylinder combustion engine is helped by a turbocharger and in total, the powertrain produces an impressive 357 horsepower and 420 lb/ft of torque. Compared with the flat-six in the 911, it produces less horsepower but slightly more torque and thanks to the electric motor, the powerband is wide and accessible. Acceleration stats are similar, but how do the two compare when they’re introduced into a few corners?

Critically, the i8 makes some compromises for economy – namely, the narrow tires which reduce rolling friction and make the car more efficient over long distances. Perhaps it’s a compliment to say that the tires are what let the car down when it comes to handling since the front axle appears responsive but simply cannot take much loading. The car still shows poise and adjustability despite its four wheel-drive layout. With lively handling and a torquey powertrain, does this new breed of sports car have enough to compete with the benchmark 911? Watch and find out.
