Engine builds are a time-consuming process – it can often take months, if not years, to get it just right. That’s not what happens in this sweet video, however – the car owner shows how easy it is to completely rebuild a supercharged 406 Chevrolet engine in just five solid minutes.

Of course, the process didn’t really take five minutes but much longer, and thanks to the wonders of time-lapse photography and today’s video editing tools, it’s easy to compress what most likely took a week or even longer down to the length of the video.

When the removal process is time-compressed, it appears much easier than it really is to get the engine out of what appears to be an early ’90’s S10 pickup. One of the technicians (term used loosely) looks to spend more time leaning on the fender than he does actually removing parts, but what engine job could be considered complete without a buddy to talk to?

Even more challenging is the amount of room that these guys have to get the engine removed – the truck fits in the garage with just enough room to walk around it and work. The liberal use of air tools speeds up the disassembly process, and we spy at least one BFH that’s employed to unstick years of grime. Especially enjoyable is the few moments spent watching the paint crinkle up on the oilpan prior to removal. 

One thing apparent during the reconstruction process was the appearance of a single precision tool – a torque wrench – but no dial indicator or bore gauge. Then again, these guys don’t appear to be after that level of precision. Enjoy the next five minutes of your life!
