When it comes to performance Mustangs, the more modern the pony car, the better performance there’s supposed to be. But don’t tell that to 1967 Mustang Fastback owner Greg Smith. As you may have guessed, DRIVE’s Big Muscle series is back! That means another season filled with unique cars, crazy performance, and of course, Mike Musto’s interesting insights.

To start off the new season, the Big Muscle crew decided to showcase this car- a 1967 Mustang Fastback purpose-built for dominating on the track.

As Musto explains, there is no fluff in this car, as everything is geared for moving the Mustang down the quarter mile faster. And even then, the Mustang doesn’t sport too many differences from a standard factory car. Aesthetically, the only difference between mild and wild is the hood scoop, extra gauges and the 8-point roll cage.

Under the hood of this cool car is a 393 Windsor stroker motor, producing plenty of oomph for acceleration purposes. That means 11.40 quarter-mile times all day long on just the motor and 10.28 time-slips with a 150 shot of nitrous.

In addition to the stout motor, the car features a Currie 9-inch rearend with 4.10 gears, a three speed transmission controlled by a B&M ratchet shifter, and Fenton slotted wheels wrapped in massive amounts of Mickey Thompson rubber in the rear. If you’re looking for an old school-cool drag car, this is the one!

While some may scoff at the idea of a few pieces being out of place, like the rivet holes in the hood for example, this car is meant to be driven. It’s not meant to win shows- it’s meant to be able to cruise and then fly down the track when commanded to. Anything else and this Mustang just wouldn’t be the same!
