Video: BBK Varitune Mufflers For Mustangs and How They Work

Everyone has different tastes when it comes to their Mustang. In terms or exhaust some want a loud car that will wake the neighbors and frighten small children, while others prefer just enough rumble to tell everyone there’s some serious power under the hood, without the extra interior noise to wear them down during the daily commute or a long road trip.

BBK’s Varitune mufflers offer Mustang owners the best of both worlds. The Varitune muffler is a truly tunable piece with adjustability for the sound level. BBK demonstrates the Varitune in the video above on a Mustang GT that has also been modified with headers and an off-road X-pipe.

The key to the Varitune muffler is the adjustment screw located on the back of the muffler. By simply moving that screw in or out exhaust gases and sound waves will take a different path. Fully closed the mufflers act as a three-chamber design offering tone and rumble that is louder than stock with less cabin noise, making them ideal for long commutes or road trips. With the adjustment screw backed all the way out to the open position, the Varitune mufflers become a wide-open design giving the car a louder (up to eight decibels), more aggressive exhaust note, and maximizing power gains found in the mufflers.

Left: When closed the Varitune is a three-chamber muffler. Right: When the adjustment screw is fully opened, the muffler performs like a wide-open design.

Changing from closed to open not only changes the sound but also the horsepower.

BBK offers the Varitune mufflers in a variety of offset configurations and sizes including 2.5, 2.75 and 3.0-inch pipe diameters. BBK is currently developing complete cat-back exhaust systems for 79-2014 Mustangs that will include the Varitune mufflers. For now you can order the muffler in the size and offset configuration if you’d rather not wait for the complete system.
