Video: 50 Best Spots in Baja – Episode 7

One of the most well known off-road racing locations in the world is Baja California, Mexico. Races like the Baja 500 and Baja 1000 draw in thousands of spectators and hundreds of race teams from all over the US and Mexico, however, many of these racers and spectators never get to stop and enjoy the true beauty of Baja.

Off-road legends Cameron Steele, Curt Leduc, Sal Fish, Bill Nichols, Jimmy Sones, Johnny Campbell, Frank DeAngelo, and others, have come together to work with BF Goodrich in creating the 50 Best Spots in Baja video series. Last video, episode six, covered spots 28 through 25. This episode will be covering spots 24 through 20.

Spot 23: “Never Never”

You may have noticed there isn’t a spot no. 24. For some reason, Cameron and his team ended up not having any footage of this location. The 24th spot on the list is Dahia Guadalupe. Spot no. 23 is the “Never Never” which is located to the southwest of San Felipe. This area is extremely desolate and dangerous to venture into. If you ever decide to travel here, make sure you have everything planned out and do not travel by yourself.

“The ’Never Never’ is this middle part of the peninsula. There’s nothing there, that’s why we call it the ’Never Never.’ If you get hurt, no one is coming for you; If you break down, no one is coming for you, because you’re in the middle of nowhere. You have to really prepare to go in this part of the peninsula,” said Johnny Campbell.

Spot 22: San Carlos Mesa

This next location, San Carlos Mesa, is located on the northern end of the ‘Never Never’ on the Pacific coast. Even though it’s massive, not a lot of people know about this location because not a lot of people can even get up there. The San Carlos Mesa sits about 1,800 to 2,000 feet above sea level, which is insane considering you can easily see the ocean from the mesa.

“When you ascend to the top of San Carlos Mesa, there’s giant cardons. You never really realize, when you’re down below, how big these cacti are at the top. When you look at how volcanic and jagged the edge is, it’s mind-boggling. It’s hard to pick one favorite spot in Baja, but this is definitely in the top ten,” said Cameron Steele.

Spot 21: “Jimmy Sones’ Favorite Spot”

Spot number 21 is simply named “Jimmy Sones’ Favorite Spot” because, well, Jimmy Sones likes this spot. This location is a sand dune located on the Pacific coast with massive dunes reaching 300 to 400 feet high. Below the dunes is a beautiful sandy beach. What’s crazy is how far you can see in either direction on the dune above the beach. There is absolutely nothing blocking your vision.

Spot 20: East Cape

The last spot, East Cape, is located near the bottom of the peninsula. It offers great surf spots, beautiful beaches, and great towns to hang out in. The East Cape road offers beautiful views of the Gulf of California where it opens up into the Pacific Ocean. In this episode, the crew stopped at Los Barrels for lunch.
