Video: 50 Best Spots in Baja – Episode 6

One of the most well known off-road racing locations in the world in Baja California, Mexico. Races like the Baja 500 and Baja 1000 draw in thousands of spectators and hundreds of race teams from all over the US and Mexico, however, many of these racers and spectators never get to stop and enjoy the true beauty of Baja.

Off-road legends Cameron Steele, Curt Leduc, Sal Fish, Bill Nichols, Jimmy Sones, Johnny Campbell, Frank DeAngelo, and others, have come together to work with BF Goodrich in creating the 50 Best Spots in Baja video series. Last video, episode five, covered sports 33 through 29. This episode will be covering spots 28 through 25.

28: Clam Corner

Clam Corner is not the real name of this location, but it’s what Cameron Steel likes to call it. It’s somewhat of a hidden location along the coast with large bluffs right along the water. “Right now I’m telling you this spot is epic, it’s a top three for me. I don’t want to say it’s my favorite for sure, but if you look at it, it’s so desolate. Drive out on the point, see all the openings underneath,” said Cameron.

“I was able to bring Frank DeAngelo, Ryan Thomas, and Curt Leduc here for the very first time, so that was kind of an honor. It was really cool because Frank came over to me and said ‘yup, we’re going to have to reconsider that list a little bit’”

27: Calamajué Wash

The next location, Calamajué Wash, is another desolate location. Cameron likes this location because it’s a great way to feel like you’re on the end of the world and remember your friends of the past who passed away desert racing. In certain parts of the wash, there are large vertical rock walls on either side with tons of plant life growing right out of the rock.

26: The Window Rock Trail

This next spot, Window Rock Trail, is a gnarly trail that goes way out into the desert of Baja with sections up to 25 miles away from the nearest civilization. This trail was created by Bill Nichols and others as an alternative to the other trails in the region. It weaves through tons of cacti, rocks, and small mountains. Parts of the trail go all the Chapala Dry Lake, the first checkpoint of the original Baja race.

The trail, not so surprisingly, ends up at a location know as Window Rock, which is a large rock out in the middle of nowhere with a small window in it.

25: Diablo Dry Lake

This next spot is introduced by the Ox memorial site which Cameron thinks of as the gateway to Diablo Dry Lake. Diablo Dry Lake, as the name suggests, is a massive dry lake with absolutely nothing growing inside of it. “It’s like a moonscape, there are no plants. There’s nothing growing out here and there are no rocks. In the Baja races you can be going across here on a motorcycle wide open throttle, laying down behind the bars,” said Jimmy Sones.
