Generally speaking, the Mazda RX-8 isn’t the most popular car on the market to modify. The 1.3-liter Renesis rotary engine makes good power for a naturally-aspirated unit, but it doesn’t accept forced-induction too well.
Some swap other engines into them, such as the ultra-versatile GM LS, and some work with what the car came with. Kelly Performance went the different route and built a 3/4 chassis drag car powered by an insane triple-turbocharged 3-rotor engine making 1,670 hp at the wheels. Weighing 2,500 pounds with power being sent through a Liberty transmission, this silver bullet of an RX-8 makes it down the quarter-mile in the mid-six second range, and sounds incredible doing it.
Three-rotor and four-rotor engines are very few and far between, and cost a ton of money to build and run, so it’s pretty rare to see a setup like this in the states. The best time that Kelly Performance’s RX-8 has put down was a 6.51 pass in the quarter on a single turbo setup. Now, they have two more turbos, a new tune, and significantly more horsepower. The car is really consistent when reviewing all of the runs in the video, and it even pulls the wheels up after leaving the finish line during the last race in the video. This RX-8 means serious business.
We love seeing unique builds like this. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, somebody defies all odds and builds something over-the-top. Hopefully we see more rotary builds like this in the future!
