Alex Kelsey is a 22-year old from New Zealand, and has been building on his rally car project, dubbed “MadCreation2”, for the last few of years. Kelsey started rallying pretty much right after he obtained his learner’s permit, and never looked back.
After progressing in rally, he decided to start building his own custom rally car in a barn, from scratch. Over time, Kelsey built a one-off chassis, a custom suspension setup, and dropped in a 450 hp RenaultSport V6 to bring the project to fruition. The body of the car is based off of a Peugeot, but even it was modified to meet Kelsey’s liking. Knowing that Formula Renault switched to V8 engines, Kelsey made it his business to find an obsolete V6. He found where they were kept in France, and quickly made an offer for the engine. Now, it is the heart of his project, and it sounds absolutely amazing coming from a rally car.
Another interesting bit about the car is the fact that it has an R/C jet engine in the dash to keep the windshield from fogging up during stages; talk about thinking of every little detail! literally everything on this car was made by Kelsey, excluding the engine and transmission; those were the only purchased parts.
To show The Smoking Tire‘s crew how the car really performs, Kelsey took them to the Coromandel Forest Park to run some stages with the crew. One of the coolest parts of the build is that its street-legal, meaning that his neighbors, and pretty much the whole town, will know when he’s testing the car. One of the best parts of the video, though, is watching the crew’s reactions to Kelsey’s aggressive driving. The looks on their faces are priceless.
It’s no wonder why Kelsey’s car can’t compete in the World Rally Championship; its simply too fast for the series and doesn’t meet nearly any of the spec requirements. However, the car performs excellently, and goes to show that anything is possible if you take the time to really put your mind to it. We commend Kelsey and his creation; hopefully more videos of his creation will surface soon!
